San Francisco Earthquake

This is an amazingly high resolution photo taken from an airship after the 1906 earthquake.  The damage to the city is overwhelming when the image is viewed at full size.  It’s an amazing technical photo for the time.  Click the link below to view the image:

Satellite

nikon.jpg

I’m currently running a feature rich and nice looking photo gallery on this site (powered by Gallery 2). While it certainly has a lot of good points it’s also very slow and cumbersome to use. Lately I’ve become infatuated with Flickr as both an online photo gallery and a place to physically store the photos. Flickr has a great photo community and a fantastic online organizing utility (Adobe Lightroom doesn’t come close to the organizing features in Flickr). Because my current photo gallery runs off of my web server I host all the photos on my physical storage. I have a great deal of space but why not use Flickr to manage the storage for me?

Now I’m trying out a new way to integrate this site with my Flickr photo gallery. The new gallery is called Satellite and you can see it running HERE. It’s much more simple looking than my Gallery 2 installation but the benefit is that it pulls the photo sets and images directly from my Flickr account. It also loads much faster. Even better, it bests Flickr by giving me a black background to work with (Flickr only offers their stock white background and many photos look best when presented on black).

I’m testing a new flickr photo import plug-in. Try clicking the thumbnail to see if this works.

It’s a HDR image from downtown Dallas.

Directly behind me is a guy selling JFK assassination souvenirs. He looked at me like I was from the moon when I set the tripod down for this shot. He asked, “What in the world are you taking a picture of? You know the president was shot out there?”

I tried to explain that I hoped this shot had more potential to be interesting than some road already seen in a billion photos. He just shook his head. Oh well.

Not much to post about. I just like the contrast between the scarred steel and the ultragreen lawn. More in the HDR set on my Flickr page.

Good News: Today Jerry Falwell finds out if he was on the right track

fallwell.gif

Jerry Falwell finally kicked the bucket today. Which means he will face one of four options: He expects to achieve vindication by the off chance that some right wing, homophobic supreme being really does rule the universe. The other side of that coin is he may face the utopian god who really does appreciate everyone equally and even puts up with Falwell’s backward ideals. More than likely he wished he had lived like Harry Flint the instant he realized life ends in a wave of dark nothingness. However, I like to think the Hindus got it right and he’ll come back reincarnated as a dildo.

Let’s take a few moments to remember the deluded messenger of hate with his own quotes:

“AIDS is not just God’s punishment for homosexuals; it is God’s punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals”

“Labor unions should study and read the Bible instead of asking for more money. When people get right with God, they are better workers.”

“Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions”

“I do not believe we can blame genetics for adultery, homosexuality, dishonesty and other character flaws”

“If you’re not a born-again Christian, you’re a failure as a human being.”

“Grown men should not be having sex with prostitutes unless they are married to them”

“The Bible is the inerrant … word of the living God. It is absolutely infallible, without error in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as well as in areas such as geography, science, history, etc.”

“The idea that religion and politics don’t mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country”

“The ACLU is to Christians what the American Nazi party is to Jews”

“I hope to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we don’t have public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them.”

“[homosexuals are] brute beasts…part of a vile and satanic system [that] will be utterly annihilated, and there will be a celebration in heaven.”

“I do question the sincerity of people like the Reverend Martin Luther King…”

“I put all the blame legally and morally on the actions of the terrorist, [but America's] secular and anti-Christian environment left us open to our Lord’s [decision] not to protect. When a nation deserts God and expels God from the culture … the result is not good.”

“Homosexuality is Satan’s diabolical attack upon the family that will not only have a corrupting influence upon our next generation, but it will also bring down the wrath of God upon America.”
